Internships
 

 
The University of South Alabama’s Department of Communication offers students a unique opportunity to learn through hands-on experience with its internship program. 
 
Employers expect advertising, interpersonal, organizational communication, film, television, radio, public relations, print journalism, and broadcast students to have completed at least one internship by graduation. 
 
Internships offer students opportunities to gain valuable “real world” knowledge in their area of interest, earn academic credit and build their portfolio. 
 
A successful internship builds a students’ knowledge, skills and experiences necessary to be successful in the workplace.There are a variety of positive benefits after completing an internship. 
 
Students gain the following:
  • Practical experience in their field of study
  • Ability to learn their strengths and weaknesses.
  • Opportunity to explore their interests.
  • Critical knowledge about their industry.
  • Access to professional networking.
  • A portfolio to utilize when pursuing employment.
  • Build confidence in their skills.
Students need to meet the following requirements for eligibility:
  1. Hold junior or senior status.
  2. Have a cumulative 2.5 GPA.
  3. Have a cumulative major 2.75 GPA.
  4. Approval from assigned advisor.
  5. Submission of resume and writing and/or design samples.
The communication department helps arrange internships to match students’ career interests and goals. Students have completed internships in the media, agencies, nonprofit, for-profit and related industries locally, nationally and internationally.
